Welcome, I’m Jocelyn. I’m always curious about people’s backstories, so here’s a bit about me….
My life flipped from teacher to writer / photographer when I was heading to Uluru during term break and a colleague challenged me to ‘bring back a photo of The Rock he’d never seen before’. The holiday-turned-quest made me realise that although millions of stories are written about iconic places, there’s always room for one more.
At the time, Australian Traveller magazine ran a ‘reader stories’ competition, so I wrote a story about trying to snap a unique photo of Uluru, sent it off, and to my surprise it was published. This was the ‘aha’ moment I needed to stop dreaming and start doing.
Since then, I’ve travelled to all seven continents, and experienced many life-changing moments like coming face to face with a polar bear, riding a horse in the Great Migration, kissing a moose, camping out in Antarctica, hanging out with the ‘real life’ characters from the musical Come From Away, and baking a pavlova in the kitchen of a swanky resort.
My words and images have been published in a broad range of Australian and international publications and I’ve been lucky enough to pick up a few awards along the way.
As a proud member of the ASTW (Australian Society of Travel Writers) I served on the Board for three years (2021 – 2023). I hold a Master of Education (University of Melbourne), Bachelor of Computer Studies (University of Melbourne), and Diploma of Photography (Photography Institute).
I’m an animal tragic and get my pet fix by looking after other people’s pooches. I love frosty mornings, growing veggies, museums, forests and exercising outdoors.
I’m a firm believer in serendipity and that ‘every journey begins with a single step, and every story begins with an idea’.
